TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) recorded that the number of train passengers during this year’s holiday season increased by about 5 percent.
“The number of passengers increased from 265,000 passengers per day on regular days to 278,000 passengers per day [during the holiday season],” Edi said at Gambir Station in Central Jakarta on Monday, December 25.
According to Edi, the increase in the number of passengers depends on the available seats provided by KAI.
“The number of passengers during this holiday season is higher than during other holidays,” he said.
For instance, the number of passengers at Gambir Station rose to 18,000 passengers per day, which was higher than the number of passengers during the Eid al Fitr holiday season at 16,000 passengers per day. The number of passengers at Senen Station also increased to 22,000 per day from 16,000 on regular days.
Earlier, KAI announced that it provided about 3,800 tickets for 17 days during the Christmas and New Year holiday season. On December 22, Edi said the tickets were sold out.
KAI had prepared 17 extra trains to anticipate a rise in the number of passengers. Although the tickets have been sold out, Edi said the seats might still be available should some passengers cancel their trips.
