TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo refused to read the 30,000 pages of declassified U.S. documents revealing their involvement in the 1965 massacre of communists.
“Why would I read the documents? That’s their state report. Every representative country always reports back to its central government,” General Gatot told journalists at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, October 24.

The TNI commander was reluctant to provide further comments regarding the existence of the U.S. documents and suggested reporters ask the Foreign Affairs Minister instead for further information.
The document released by the U.S. national security archive (NSA) suggests that throughout 1964 to 1968, the U.S. Government was well-informed about the involvement of the TNI in the massacre of Indonesian communist party members (PKI).
Information in the document reveals that the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta kept the records of the identities of murdered PKI leaders and US Officials who actively supported the attempts by the TNI in eradicating the ‘left-wing’ labor movement.
