67 Hot Spots Indicating Forest Fire Detected in Sumatra

TEMPO.CO, Pekanbaru - Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Pekanbaru Station has detected 24 hot spots indicating forest and land fires in Riau Province.

"Twenty four hot spots with the confidence of more than fifty percent were detected in six regencies," Pekanbaru BMKG’s Data and Information unit head Slamet Riyadi said in Pekanbaruon Friday, September 1.

Slamet further explained that the satellites detected 67 hot spots in Sumatra Island today. In addition to 24 spots in Riau, 22 spots were detected in South Sumatra, nine spots in Jambi, four spots in Aceh, three spots in West Sumatra, four spots in Bengkulu, and one spot in Lampung.

In January 2017, Riau Provincial administration declared forest and land fire alert status, and it has been extended to the end of November. Such a measure was implemented in order to anticipate the annual disaster of forest and land fire striking the area.
