Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake Hits West Sumatra, No Tsunami Warning

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 5.4 earthquake hit several regions in West Sumatra today at 11:09 local time.
The epicenter of the earthquake was monitored at 2.30 degrees south latitude and 99.84.56 east longitude, 44 kilometers southeast of the Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra, said the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
“It was 22 kilometers deep. It has no potential to cause a tsunami,” BMKG Padang Panjang Station head Rahmat Triyono said today.
The Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) Mentawai chapter head Nurdin said that the quake was felt in Mentawai and several districts in West Sumatra, such as Padang Panjang City, Padang Panjang and Bukittinggi City.
Earlier, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake with an epicenter in Bengkulu was felt in some areas in West Sumatra at 10:08. Strong tremors were felt in Padang City.
