TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The US State Department has designated the Majelis Mujahidin Indonesia (MMI), an Indonesia-based terrorist group, and Iraqi Islamic State (IS) leader Marwan Ibrahim Hussayn Tah al-Azawi as global terrorists.
“US nationals are prohibited from engaging in transactions or dealings with Azawi or MMI, and all of their property and interests in property subject to America Jurisdiction are frozen,” the State Department said as quoted by Xinhua on Tuesday, June 13, 2017.
According to the State Department, MMI and Azawi have been listed as the Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) and are considered posing threats against the US. The MMI was formed in 2000 by Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, leader of the designated Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist Group Jamaah Islamiah (JI).
The State Department claimed that the organization had staged attacks in Indonesia, such as the one that occurred in May 2012. The organization, the State Department added, is also affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Al-Nusra Front.
Earlier, the US also listed Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), Aman Abdurrahman, and Bahcrumsyah as global terrorists after the three pledged their allegiance to the IS in January.
To this date, the MMI has not yet provided comment in relation to the announcement.
