TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko Widodo (Jokowi) made a promise on Thursday that he would settle all unsettled cases of the past including the death case of human rights activist Munir Said Thalib.

The president made the statement during a meeting with a number of law experts and practitioners at Merdeka Palace.

He had gathered the law experts and practitioners to collect inputs to improve law enforcement in the country.

"They need a firm law enforcement action," the president said.

President Jokowi asked the law experts and practitioners to give inputs regarding the settlement of the cases and also on how to put overlapping laws in order.

He also asked for inputs on how to put law enforcement agencies in the country in order.

"We ask for recommendations for putting our law enforcement institutions, such as for example the police, the ministry of justice and human rights or perhaps the prosecutors office and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) so that settlement of cases could be done thoroughly, comprehensively and really settling problems in our country," he said.

President Jokowi said he was aware that law enforcement in Indonesia has not yet been able to give a deterrent effect to the violators.

He said he had been resolved to settle the cases and reform law enforcement agencies in Indonesia.

"I think we all know there have been a lot of corruption cases unveiled recently relating to elite members of state institutions and influence dealing. Law enforcement on the other hand has not yet been able to give a deterrent effect in terms of sentences or sentence demand," he said.
