TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police shot two out of five `begal`, a.k.a. street robbers who on motorcycles armed with weapons, on Friday last week. The group operates in the South Jakarta-Depok area.
The five begals are young men, the youngest being 16 and the oldest 22. Juan Felix (19) and Irfan Amien Fauzy (20) were the ones shot by the police.
"We had to shot two of them for trying to escape," South Jakarta Resort Police chief Sr. Comr. Indra Fajar said here on Tuesday, July 17.
Police records show that the group has the most numbers of "operating areas" in Depok. "They have committed robberies seven times in those areas," Indra said.
The last time this group committed their crime was in front of the Montessori School at Jalan Durian, South Jakarta on May 6.
