TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned lender Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) President Director Suprajarto has admitted his clients were the most vulnerable to the the card-skimming scam despite the crime also afflicting other banking customers.
“We have a large number of clients, 70 million customers with 25 million ATMs spread across the country. If we talk about skimming scam, we took the largest hit because our ATMs are spread in every remote area that lacks supervision,” said Suprajarto in Wisma BRI, South Jakarta, today.
As reported earlier, as many as 33 BRI customers in Kediri, East Java, have fallen victim to skimming scam. They saw a sudden decrease in their saving accounts when doing a transaction at ATMs. In average, the victims lost Rp500,000 up to Rp1 million. The Jakarta Police has arrested a skimming syndicate allegedly behind the massive stealing case.

Suprajarto said the bank had collaborated with the police to stem the case in a bid to maintain the trust BRI customers.
BRI has taken an array or measures to tackle the crime, including the installment of anti-skimming and anti-fraud technology, migration to chip-based ATM cards, as well as disseminating info on how to do safe transaction to its customers.

“Fast response to solving the case will safeguard our good reputation, which brings people to have faith that BRI seriously handles the problem,” Suprajarto added.
Aside from BRI, skimming scam has also beset the country's largest lender by assets Bank Mandiri. Based on Tempo's data, the money stolen from Bank Mandiri customers ranges from Rp1-2 million in average.
