TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo hopes the newly inaugurated Hasyim Asy'ari Great Mosque in West Jakarta can be a symbol of friendly and moderate Islam.
"Indonesia is a diverse nation. This mosque becomes the symbol of friendly and moderate Islam that acknowledges diversity in Jakarta in particular and in Indonesia in general,” Jokowi said on Saturday after inaugurating the mosque.
Jokowi added the mosque was named after KH Hasyim Asy'ari, whom the President said a national hero who loved the country wholeheartedly.
"He proved that his love for the country would not fade. As a person who founded Nahdhatul Ulama, he laid the foundation of practicing religions in a friendly way,” Jokowi added.
