TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said that the effectiveness of the light rail transit (LRT) to reduce traffic jams in the Capital could not be measured yet. However, Ahok predicted that the LRT might be able to reduce traffic jams by 50-60 percent.
"I'm not sure yet [about the LRT effectiveness] since the project has not been completed yet. But if It’s completed [it might reduce traffic jams] by 50 to 60 percent. People will choose [public transportations]," Ahok said in Jakarta on Friday, February 24, 2017.
According to Ahok, the success in reducing traffic jams would depend on the effectiveness of mass transportations in Jakarta, such as the mass rapid transit (MRT), LRT, and Transjakarta.
Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) president director Satya Heragandhi said that the LRT project development has progressed to four percent, which is ahead of schedule.
"So [the target] can be attained faster than we expected," Satya added.
Jakpro has selected Hyundai Rotem as the supplier for rolling stock. Hunda Rotem won the tender from four other vendors participated in a P103 tender. Meanwhile, the signaling system will be developed along with the construction project.
