TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Consumer Association Group (HLKI) of West Java, Jakarta, and Banten raised questions on the halal status of hajj souvenirs from Mecca, Saudi Arabia, that were brought home by the hajj pilgrims. The group was concerned because there are many cheap Chinese products sold in Mecca.
Chairman of the HLKI Firman Turmantara said that until today, there has been no research on the halal status of Chinese-made hajj souvenirs sold in Mecca, either by the Arab government or Indonesian Government.
"We reminded the consumers to be cautious, especially those who purchases [hajj souvenirs] in Saudi Arabia. Please ask the seller for information of their halal status. I'm not accusing it to contain any pork products," Firman said on Tuesday, October 11, 2016.
Firman who is also a lecturer on Consumers Protection Law, plans to conduct a research on the halal status of Chinese-made hajj souvenirs. "The consumers must be guaranteed of their security, comfort, health, and safety based on the UN resolution of 1985. Saudi Arabia must guarantee [the products'] halal status," Firman concluded.
