TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government will build 700,000 houses for low-income people (MBR) to meet housing need this year.
Syarif Burhanuddin, Director General for Housing Provision of the Public Works and Public Housing, said his agency is aiming to build 700,000 houses or an increase from last year’s number of 603,000 houses.
“Non-MBR people usually buy houses for investment instead of living purpose, so the priority is to push the development of housing for MBR,” Syarif said as quoted by Bisnis.com, Thursday, April 28, 2016.
He said that developers are reluctant to build affordable houses due to long licensing process. Therefore, Syarif said that his agency is striving to streamline the process to obtain residential construction permit.
“The process to build affordable or expensive houses are equally [difficult]. So, because both are equally difficult, developers choose [to build] commercial property,” Syarif said.
