TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Health Minister Nila Moeloek stated that she would screen on the legality of organ trade. Kidney transplant, for example, is legal in the field of health. It would not be legal, however, if the organ is traded. “It’s still only early investigations, let’s wait the results,” said Nila, Friday, February 5, 2016, when she came to the office of Criminal Investigation Unit of the Indonesian Police.

Nila came to the police in relation to the human organ trade issue.  Earlier this week, National Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit searched Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. The police alleged that the hospital has been practicing organ trades. “Investigations will be continued by the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Indonesian Police (Bareskrim),” said Nila.

Nila declined to comment when asked about the involvement of Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital’s employee(s). She suggested to wait for the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Indonesian Police’s investigation results first. She also agreed on punishment against the parties involved in the organ trade, but declined to make accusation without proof. Health Ministry would revoke hospital’s permit if proven to be involved in the case.

“It will be done if involved, but it must be proven,” she said. Nila explained that she and the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Indonesian Police have understood each other’s position on this issue. “It will be addressed together,” she said.
