Eight Must-Visit Destinations in Aceh

TEMPO.CO, Aceh - Aceh is the westernmost part of Indonesia that is located in the north of Sumatra Island. Sharing border with the Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean, and Malaka Strait, Aceh is well known for its marine wonders.

For you who plan to visit Aceh, below is the list of recommended destinations in Aceh that is taken from Wonderful Indonesia site.

1. Weh Island

In addition to the wonderful coral reef view, the small island has a waterfall that is hidden in the forest. Diving remains the most attractive activity especially in Rubiah Island Marine Park where divers are offered experience to meet manta ray, shark, whale, doplhins and turtles.

In this island, you can also enjoy Iboih Beach with its shallow and clear water, and Gapang Beach in Sabang that is well known among the world’s backpackers.

Sumur Tiga Beach is another option. This beach has three fresh-water wells along its coastline. Differently from Iboih and Gapang, Sumur Tiga has crystal-like and fine sands although the water is a bit wavy.

About five kilometers from Iboih Beach, there is a monument that marks Indonesia’s zero-kilometer. The monument is located in Sabang Tourism Forest in Iboih Ujong Ba’u village.

2. Mount Leuseur National Park

An adventure in the 1.09-hectare natural conserve can be started from Lawang Hill, North Sumatra. Primates are awaiting to greet you in the national park that is one of the biggest in Indonesia.

3. Baiturrahman Grand Mosque

The grand mosque was first built under the leadershio of Sultan Iskandar Muda in 1621. It is made of woods and is located in the center of Banda Aceh. It has 35-meter high tower, 7 big domes and 7 towers. When tsunami hit Aceh in 2004, the mosque stood still providing shelter for hundreds of victims.

4. Alas River

Nested 165-km southeast of Takengon, Alas river flows through Mt Leuseur National park. The area is popular among younger generations and adventure-seekers for its sharp turning points and challenging stream. Along your river journey, you will penetrate the pure tropical forest with variety of wild animals.

5. Takengon

Takengon is the capital city of Central Aceh. This area is a highland with refreshing air. One of the attractions in Takengon is the Fresh-water Sea Lake, Puteri Pukes, and Pantan Terong. Takengon is located nearby Bener Meriah Regency, and is around 100-km from Bireun.

6. Aceh Tsunami Museum

The museum is located on Jl Iskandar Muda, banda Aceh and is open everyday starting from 10.00 to 12.00 and 15.00 to 17.00 except on Friday. From a far, the uniquely-designed elevated house looks like a ship complete with its chimney.

7. Indra Patra Fort

The fort, that is located in Teluk Krueng Raya is the heritage of the first Hindhust kingdom in Aceh. The fort is part of the Aceh Ihee Sagoe Trail when connected with Indrapuri and Indrapurwa.

8. Tapaktuan

Tapaktuan is the capital city of South Aceh. The land is located on 500-meter above the sea level. The location gives Tapkatuan wet tropical air with charming beach and bay. Beaches in Tapaltuan are Labuhan Haji beach, Cold Water Tourism, Panorama Hatta, Pulau Dua, Genting Buaya, La Sejuk Panjupian, Twi Lhok Waterfall, Batu Berlayar, or Kalam Cave.
