Jokowi: RI Needs Special Products ahead of AEC

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo emphasized the need to identify competitive domestic products ahead of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2016, in order to anticipate a massive flow of foreign products into the region.
Jokowi made the statement on Sunday night, April 26, 2015 after a dinner gala prior to the 26th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Jokowi has also expressed optimism that Indonesia will be ready to face the AEC with its diverse products.
“We must be optimistic since Indonesia has various products with strong competitiveness,” Jokowi added.
During the summit, ASEAN countries will discuss their preparations prior to the AEC in 2016. Jokowi said that the ASEAN member countries could not afford to postpone the implementation of the AEC in 2016.
On the sidelines of the summit, the heads of states have been scheduled to meet with the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ABAC), the ASEAN Youth Representatives and the Civil Society Organization (CSO) Representatives. They will also be invited to attend the 12th ASEAN Leadership Forum in Kuala Lumpur.
Besides the ASEAN Summit, Langkawi the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Trangle (IMT-GT) will be organized in Langkawi on Tuesday, April 28, 2015.
