TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Small and medium entrepreneurs will be able to secure a patent for their products for free.
Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (UKM) Minister Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Puspayoga hoped good quality UKM products could be protected with copyright. “This copyright can be obtained for free online,” said Puspayoga on Wednesday.
He said this cooperation with the Directorate General for Intellectual Property Rights was a new breakthrough to step up productivity and creativity of UKM entrepreneurs.
“Export-oriented UKM products can be registered for patents for free,” said Puspayoga, adding the ministry would also establish a data center for UKM applying for a patent.
It takes a maximum of 14 days for a patent to be issued, and only one day if an application is enclosed with a letter of recommendation from the ministry. “The main thing is we will make it easy to secure patent,” said Puspayoga.
This cooperation between the Cooperatives and UKM Ministry and the Justice and Human Rights Ministry is the first pilot project for online patent registration.
Intellectual Property Rights director general Ahmad M. Ramli said the copyright of a product had to be registered to avert illicit duplication. Thus, UKM entrepreneurs will no longer have to organize an exhibition overseas. “From now on, their products are protected by the law,” he said.
