TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has asked for the recall of the Indonesian ambassador-designate to Brazil in response to Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff's decision to reject the credential letters from Indonesia's ambassador-designate to Brazil, Toto Riyanto.
Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi and Toto Riyanto met with President Jokowi at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday in light of the incident.
"After I received news of the incident, I immediately asked our ambassador-designate to be recalled back to Indonesia until further notice," Jokowi told a press conference following the meeting.
Jokowi reiterated that there shouldn't be any further international intervention in Indonesia's death penalty stance because it represented an assault to Indonesia's legal and political sovereignty.
"The reason why I recalled the ambassador-designate is because this is a matter of national pride and dignity. I see their interventionist stance as a big issue," he said.
