Govt Offers Non Commercial Harbors to Privates

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Transportation will offer 50 non-commercial harbors, currently managed by the ministry's technical implementation unit (UPT), to private or state-owned port managers. Adolf R. Tambunan, director of ports and dredging at the ministry's Sea Directorate General, said the decision was made because the government does not have enough money to develop the ports commercially.
"We will start the offer in three months," Adolf said yesterday.
Some of the harbors to be offered are Bungkutoko (Kendari), Karongkong (Sulawesi Selatan), Bau-Bau (Sulawesi Tenggara), Anggrek (Gorontalo), and Calang (Aceh). Based on the Ministry's records, there are currently 180 private port managers operating in Indonesia, with Pelindo acting as the state port manager.
Indonesia is home to 1,241 sea ports, of which 112 are managed by Pelindo.
