TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The military has assumed control over Burkina Faso following last week's coup that deposed President Blaise Compaore. The regime, led by Lt. Col. Isaac Zida, has since vowed to return the ultimate executive power once the next administration assumes office.

In light of the changed circumstances, the African Union (AU) has given a two-week deadline for Burkina Faso's military regime to step back and return to their civilian lies, and threatens to impose sanctions on Burkina Faso if the military regime overlooks its recommendations.

The Air Force Commander for African Union's Peace and Security Division, Simeon Oyono Esono, said that the coup in Burkina Faso was against the democratic principles that the Union espouses. That said, the AU believes that ultimately it was the people's desire for change that enabled the nation to oust President Blaise Compaore from his long-held position.

"The ensuing chaos has enabled the armed forces to assume control of the state," said Simeon, as quoted by Al-Jazeera on Monday, November 3, 2014.

Last week, a popular uprising successfully deposed Blaise Compaore, who had ruled as president for 27 years.

Although the ground conditions in Burkina Faso is reported to be relatively conducive, a number of protests can still be observed across the capital. Residents have returned to the streets to reject military rule, and called for a snap presidential election to be done as soon as possible.

A spokesperson for the Blaise Compaore's opposition, Jean-Hubert Bazie, said the fall of Compaore was a victory for the nation's people, and as such they have a right to decide the future course of the nation.

"We simply cannot let the military take over," said Bazie.
