TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After the government mandated that only registered coal exporters could make shipments, the number of licensed exports recommendations given continues to grow. Since the regulation took force on October 1, 145 companies have bagged the recommendations.
"It will continue to grow because now there are now 42 companies processing their recommendations," Bambang Tjahjono, director of coal development and utilization at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, told Tempo yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Trade Ministry's director general of foreign trade, Partogi Pangaribuan, said that the coal export rule was issued as a response to the Corruption Eradication Commission's (KPK) suggestion on how to improve governance in the coal sector, particulary to prevent illegal exports.
R. Sukhyar, director general of mineral and coal at the Energy Ministry, said that as of August 2014, coal production has reached some 280 million tons. Of the volume, about 75 percent (211 million tons) went to exports.
