TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said the city administration would ban people living in villages from slaughtering poultry by January next year, as reported by Antara News.
He said that such a regulation would be aimed at protecting residents from various diseases, such as the avian flu.
He said he expected to face a public outcry because the policy would potentially decrease the incomes of people who live in villages.
“I know that people will protest against us. However, we have no other choices. We have to take firm action instead of seeing an increasing number of people dying in Jakarta because of such diseases,” he said on Monday.
He said that what he would do next year was in line with a 2007 bylaw stating that poultry nurtured by uncertified breeders was to be killed by the city administration.
