Water Crises Hit Lamongan

TEMPO.CO, Lamongan – Water crises in a number of areas in Lamongan regency, East Java have worsened as the dry season was bound to climax.

According to the data Tempo received from the Public Works and Irrigation Agency of Lamongan regency, 18 of the 33 dams and 11 swamps in the region had desiccated. The reservoirs and the dams used to contain water as much as 110,608,906 cubic meters.

“Most of the dams have dried up,” Lamongan administration spokesman Mohammad Zamroni told Tempo on Tuesday, August 26, 2014.

The dry dams, among them Lopang, Mojomanis, Takeran, Rande and Dermo dams, have prompted water crises in multiple areas, including Kembangbahu, Tikung, Deket and Sarirejo districts.

Among the parched swamps in the regency are Cungkup and Kwanon swamps in Pucuk district, Rawa Songo and Semando swamps in Babat district, and Manyar and Bulu swamps in Sekaran regency.
