TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo said he would submit his resignation letter as governor in August 2014. “After Lebaran,” said Jokowi at the City Hall on Wednesday.
Jokowi’s resignation letter will likely be discussed by new members of the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD), which will be inaugurated in August.
After Jokowi officially resigns, Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama will automatically succeed Jokowi as governor. Deputy governor position will then be empty, pending a replacement.
Jokowi said the authority to appoint the capital’s new deputy governor was in Ahok’s hands. “Don’t ask me. I’m not the one who chooses and recommends,” he said.
Ahok said the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party—the parties throwing their weight behind Jokowi and Ahok in the 2012 gubernatorial race—would mull over who would be Ahok’s deputy.
“There should be two names proposed by the PDI-P and Gerindra,” said Ahok.
