TEMPO.CO, Mataram - West Nusa Tenggara Governor, Muhammad Zainul Majdi, has been notified yesterday about Newmont's plan on reducing its mining operation starting June 1. Newmont Nusa Tenggara has decided to reduce its production activities due to export bans on mineral concentrate and smelter construction issues.
Spokesman for the East Nusa Tenggara administration, Tri Budi Prayitno, said Newmont had no intention to sack but to suspend its employees.
"The governor has asked Newmont to find a solution," said Budi to Tempo earlier today.
Budi revealed that 15 percent of the total 4,000 employees will be maintained to handle environmental works, while the suspended workers will still receive basic salary and health allowance.
Governor Zainul Majdi, who was in talks with the Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik, said the mining operation halt would not only cause problems to East Nusa Tenggara, but also to the central government.
