TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US Vice President Joe Biden said that his country would support Ukraine to fight corruption and rebuild its government.
In a high-level meeting with Ukraine, Biden said he brought a message of support from President Barack Obama for leaders of Ukrainian political parties.
"The opportunity to generate a united Ukraine, getting it right, is within your grasp. And we want to be your partner and friend in the project. We want to assist," Biden said as quoted by Associated Press on Tuesday.
Biden spoke in front of Ukraine's representatives in a parliament assembly room called Verkhovna Rada. Among those representatives were three presidential candidates for election in May 25.
Biden also met Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. They then planned to meet with democracy activists.
Biden's visit coincided with Ukraine's crisis, days after an international agreement was reached to end violence in eastern Ukraine.
