TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Political expert from Gajah Mada University, Ari Dwipayana, stated that Democrat Convention is at its anticlimax, in light of several comments addressing that the convention is no longer relevant. The result of legislative election has also shown that the convention failed to boost vote.
"The purpose of the convention was boost vote up to 10 percent. Apprently, quick count configuration did not put Democrat party at a position to create a coalition axis," Ari told Tempo.
Public saw Democrat not being able to create the fourth coalition axis as it does not have a figure to stand as electoral magnet. Ari suggested that Demokrat should not propose its own presidential candidate, instead commiting a power sharing with other parties.
"The party must be realistic on taking option, either to support an axis, not to propose a candidate, not to support other parties, or to allow its supporters to vote other parties," Ari said.
Democrat's spokesman Ruhut Sitompul added that the convention failed on boosting vote because the convention participants were not down to mass basis, focusing only to win the convention.
