TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Association of Indonesian Cocoa Exporters' (Askindo) chairmain, Zulhefi Sikumbang, stated that chocolate consumption in Indonesia is increasing. Domestic consumption was only 0.016 kilograms per capita a few years ago and increased to 0.3 kilograms per capita early this year.
Despite the increase, it is still far from consumption in other countries such as Switzerland with 15 kilograms per capita and neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Singapore with almost 1 kilogram per capita, respectively.
According to Zulhefi, materials for chocolate have dropped in the last three years. "It has decreased since 2009. That's why, Askindo encourages chocolate industry not to produce half-finished products anymore," he said. He expected that chocolate home industries could mix chocolate in traditional products such as pancake and dodol to boost national and chocolate product sales.
