TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Reuters photographer Molhem Barakat was killed in Allepo, Syria, on Friday, December 20. Times of India reported that Barakat was shot dead while covering a fierce battle between the rebels and Bashar al-Assad's troops in Kindi Hospital in Aleppo, Syria.
Barakat, 17, has been contributing for Reuters since May this year. Several of his photos had been publicized in global scale.
His death rings a bell to violence against journalists on duty. Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières-RSF) claimed that there has been 71 killed journalists this year, a relatively high number. Out of the total, 39 percent died in conflict zone like Syria, Somalia, Mali, India, Pakistan, and Russia.
