TEMPO.CO, Jakarta- The Jakarta administration is continuing with its plan to eradicate the capital from masked monkey shows (topeng monyet) by capturing 29 monkeys suspected of being used for these performances. A raid on Tuesday was conducted headed by East Jakarta Mayor Krisdianto at a village near the residential area of buskers holding the monkey shows.
"This raid is in line with the Jakarta governor’s policy on ridding Jakarta of street monkeys by 2014," said Krisdianto.
The monkeys and their owners were brought to the East Jakarta mayor’s office to be listed. Afterwards, the monkeys underwent a medical checkup to see whether or not they are ill or have any diseases.
The mayor said the administration would buy each captured monkey for one million rupiah while the handlers and trainers of these monkeys would be provided with training to help them seek new job opportunities.
