TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President of China Xi Jinping said that his country sees Indonesia as having crucial influence to the Association of Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN). Therefore, there are at least five major partnership aspects that must be highlighted between China and ASEAN nations.
The first aspect is to uphold agreements and build friendships. Xi Jinping said the key to a relationship is trust. He would like China and ASEAN to continue to strengthen the feeling of mutual trust in politics and the energy sector. He called on all to respect each other within the social system, in order to pave the way for growth and socio-economic developments between both parties.
The second aspect is mutual beneficial cooperation. Xi Jinping said China is willing to expand his nation’s scale by opening up to ASEAN countries, including increasing trade volumes by up to US$1 trillion in 2020. China also vowed to continue to improve developments for transportation and communication.
Xi then added the third aspect saying that China and ASEAN must agree to increase the peace and stability of the region. He reminded all that both regions have struggled together to fight for freedom, face the monetary crisis in Asia and overcome natural disasters. He urged everyone to eliminate the mindset of a cold war and actively uphold the concept of comprehensive security.
The fourth aspect was partnerships in various fields. Xi Jinping said there must be collaborations among the youth, intellects, parliament, non-government organizations and foundations.
Last but not least, China’s president asserted that there must be tolerance among all. He said China and ASEAN are rich with glorious civilization and its diversity and differences can be a way to learn from one another and encourage growth.
After the speech, House of Representatives chairman Marzuki Alie said he hopes Indonesia’s partnership with China will continue. He stated how Xi Jinping wishes to make Indonesia as the center for ASEAN cooperation. He is sure that Indonesia and China ties are a concrete step that should garner support.
Xi Jinping’s speech marked history as he is the first foreign leader to address Indonesia’s House of Representatives.
