TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - New documents leaked by former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden allege that Washington spied on the presidents of Mexico and Brazil. Both countries are now demanding for an explanation to Washington.
"The government of Mexico rejects and categorically condemns any works of espionage against Mexican citizens in violation of international law," a statement from the Mexican Foreign Ministry said on Monday, September 2, 2013.
In Brazil, Foreign Minister Luiz Alberto Figueiredo considered the act as an offense. "This is an inadmissible and unacceptable violation of Brazilian sovereignty," he said in a news conference Monday afternoon.
Both countries' reaction was aimed to the latest documents leaked by Snowden to Brazil's Guardian journalist, Glenn Greenwald. The documents were revealed on Globo's TV news program 'Fantastico', they were considered as serious as it could strain Washington's relations with Latin America's two biggest nations.
