TEMPO Interactive, SLEMAN:The Kinahrejo area in Sleman, Yogyakarta, which was destroyed by the recent eruptions of Mt Merapi has created a unique tourist attraction motor cross lava tours.The roads in the disaster area are filled with volcanic material that has become an attraction for motor cross fans. They can also enjoy Mount Merapis view from a distance, Agus Choliq, a Kinahrejo resident explained yesterday. Kinahrejo was also home to Mbah Maridjan, Mount Merapis spiritual gate keeper who died during the eruptions in late October.Tourists taking the unique motor cross tours will be welcomed by traditional jathilan, one of the most famous art forms in the area. Although all the instruments were destroyed in the disaster, we are still trying to revive the art, said Kinahrejo resident Wahyono. The lava tours are intended to attract both domestic and foreign tourists and several locals have been studying English so they can work as foreign tour guides. The tourism package includes tree planting in the disaster area, which also serves as a forestation program. During the holidays, thousands of tourists visit Kinahrejo, with 500 visitors on regular days.MUH SYAIFULLAH
