TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Seven members of the Jakarta Regional Police’s Mobile Brigade (Brimob) are being investigated by the Professionalism and Security Division (Propam) of the National Police Headquarters in connection with the death of online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan.
Affan was fatally hit and run over by a police tactical vehicle deployed to disperse demonstrators at the Bendungan Hilir II Flats in Central Jakarta on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
“The Head of the National Police's Propam Division, Inspector General Abdul Karim, has confirmed the investigation,” said Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, Head of the Public Information Bureau of the Police Public Relations Division, on Friday, August 29, 2025.
The seven Brimob personnel being investigated are Commissioner CD, Police Adjutant Second M, Brigadier Chief R, Police Sergeant First D, Police Sergeant Second M, Chief Brigadier Y, and Chief Brigadier D. Karim added that Propam is coordinating with the Jakarta Metropolitan Police’s Brimob Corps for the investigation.
An eyewitness residing at Bendungan Hilir Flats, Central Jakarta, recounted that the Brimob initially blocked demonstrators on Penjernihan I Street, near the Pejompongan gas station, around 07:25 PM WIB. Suddenly, a police tactical vehicle sped toward the crowd.
“An online motorcycle taxi driver fell in the middle of the road as the crowd scattered. Just as he tried to get up, the vehicle hit him. It didn’t stop but kept moving and ran over the victim,” the eyewitness told Tempo on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.
Angered, the crowd pursued the tactical vehicle while the police fired tear gas toward the flats. “Even residents on the tenth floor could still smell the tear gas,” the eyewitness said.
Kevin, another resident, added that the tear gas was fired from a distance of about 10 to 20 meters from the flats’ entrance gate. “Elderly people and children near the gate were also affected by the tear gas,” he said.
