TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As one of the most influential figures in the world, Pope Francis surprisingly leads a life much like any ordinary person. From dawn until dusk, he maintains a balance between his personal life and his work responsibilities. What do the Pope routines look like? Let’s find it out through this article, based on Huff Post and Ranker.
1. Waking up at 4:30 AM
The Pope’s routine starts very early in the morning. The Pope wakes up at 4:30 AM, which reflects how he truly respects the given opportunity by God and is not wasting it at all. In the first two hours after waking up, the Pope starts his day by praying, meditating and studying the Scripture, and preparing his morning homily.
2. Arranging a mass at 7:00 AM
The first thing he does for the community and his spiritual life is arrange a mass in the chapel of the Vatican's Santa Marta hotel. This mass is conducted in a simple way, from the Pope’s entrance to his choice of clothing. At the end of the mass, the Pope will move to the back of the chapel in silence and pray in between the attendees. As he leaves, he will personally greet each person in the atrium outside the chapel. This mass is known to be the most privileged way to get close to the Pope, stated Huff Post.
3. Having breakfast with company
After the mass, the Pope goes straight to the hotel's cafétaria to have breakfast with some privileged company. He has a regular table to enjoy his breakfast along with the menu of fresh-squeezed orange juice and membrillo, a popular food from his homeland, Argentina.
4. Working and scheduling
Working from his simple home office in the second-floor Santa Marta room 201, the Pope is typically just reciting and reading the rosary, or sometimes traveling to the Apostolic Palace to address formal audiences. Although he has busy routines, the Pope prefers to be in charge of scheduling his own daily agenda, from booking appointments to having a phone call.
5. Enjoying a relaxing afternoon
Every busy day needs a quick break, and for the Pope, it is during the afternoon. At 1:00 PM, he heads back to the hotel's cafétaria to have his lunch. Once he’s done, he will take a break by having a short nap around 40 minutes to an hour.
6. Going back to work
Despite finding the nap refreshing, the Pope chose not to follow in the footsteps of his predecessors and continue his refreshing activities with a walk in the Vatican gardens. Instead, he returned to work.
7. Ending his day
The moment his agenda is done, the Pope goes back to the hotel's cafétaria at 8:00 PM and has a buffet. Afterward, he stopped by the hotel lobby to thank the Swiss Guard, Vatican gendarme, and the hotel staff before going back to his room. By 9:00 PM, he will be already in bed, reading a book, and ready to have a nice rest for six hours.
8. Wanting to go out
By staying at Santa Marta, the Pope actually has carved out a space where he can continue living the life he’s accustomed to as a religious priest. Yet, there's one unfulfilled wish, and that is he's feeling trapped. He always wanted to spend more time outside his home office, but it can’t be done as the risk of drawing large crowds prevents him from doing so.
As described in the article, it was seen that the Pope's lifestyle is typically similar to that of regular people. His routines revolve around his daily needs and his work, even his unfulfilled wish. After all, the daily life of the Pope is fascinating as he manages to maintain a balance between his personal life and responsibility.
