TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Catholic leader Pope Francis has hailed the Silaturahmi Tunnel connecting the Istiqlal Mosque and the Jakarta Cathedral Church as a symbol of genuine brotherhood among the Indonesian people. He believes that the tunnel provides a space for meetings, dialogues, and the sharing of spiritual experiences, fostering a sense of togetherness.
“It can be a true experience of brotherhood in a procession of solidarity, a sacred pilgrimage,” the Pope said during his visit to Southeast Asia’s largest mosque in Jakarta on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
He encouraged the Indonesian people to continue on this path, allowing them to develop their spirituality and practice their religion. He emphasized the importance of seeking God and contributing to the development of a society founded on mutual respect and love.
“And they can be able to protect themselves from fanaticism, fundamentalism, and extremism, which are always dangerous and can never be justified,” he added.
According to him, the tunnel is not merely a formality but a pathway of friendship between the Indonesian people, supported by civil leaders and leaders of different religions. He attributed this achievement to the noble character of the Indonesian people.
The Istiqlal Mosque was designed by architect Friedrich Silaban, a Christian who won the design competition. The Pope noted that this demonstrates how culture and mosques in Indonesia serve as spaces for dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence among other religions and spiritual beliefs.
He considered this a noble gift. The religious experience can serve as a reference for others, as it exemplifies peace. “And it is never a reason to be closed-minded or hostile,” the Pope remarked.
Following his visit to the Istiqlal Mosque, Pope Francis will continue his meeting with beneficiaries of charitable organizations at the office of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference (KWI). At 5:00 p.m., he will lead a grand mass at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Stadium in Jakarta.
