First Look on HMD's Barbie Flip Phone

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - HMD Global, also known as Nokia manufacturer, reportedly launched the Barbie Flip Phone in collaboration with Mattel on August 28, 2024. The bright pink gadget was released to commemorate the Barbie doll's 65th birthday this year. 

The Barbie Flip Phone is expected to gain popularity after the success of the "Barbie" movie starring Margot Robbie last year. As quoted by Reuters, research firm CCS Insight estimates that HMD can sell over 400,000 units of Barbie Flip Phones in the UK. 

Citing from the HMD official page, the Global Chief Marketing Officer, Lars Silberbauer commented, “In our fast-paced digital world, it can often feel like the online buzz never stops. This phone encourages you to ditch your smartphone in times when you just want less browsing and more fun, all with the help of a true cultural icon, Barbie. Barbie is as popular as she’s ever been, and feature phones are continuing to go from strength to strength – we’re bringing two brilliant things together. We cannot wait for people to get their hands on the device and take a holiday from their smartphone.”

Design 

The Barbie Flip Phone supports Barbie's iconic chic pink in a sleek style. The company is introducing it as a device straight out of Barbie Dreamhouse, complete with a few hidden surprises, said to be palm trees, hearts, and flamingos designed under the pink keypad. To add to the anticipation, these hidden designs can light up in the dark. 

The Barbie Flip Phone comes in a jewelry box with free accessories such as stickers and gems, two different phone covers, beaded lanyards, and attachable charms. HMD encourages creativity with the "build your own sparkle" market with the Barbie Flip Phone.   

In addition to the bright pink exterior, the Barbie Flip Phone comes with a pink battery and a pink USB Type C charger. 

Features 

HMD is committed to exemplifying the Barbie lifestyle with the Barbie Flip Phone, which features a time to disconnect and reconnect themes. Users will be greeted with the remarkable voice message "Hi Barbie" when the phone is turned on. 

Unlike other recent mobile phone releases, the Barbie Flip Phone will not have internet access and the rest of the social media applications installed on the system. However, the phone is equipped with basic phone features including calling and texting. 

The Barbie Flip Phone features a 2.8" QVGA resolution and 1.77" QQVGA secondary display coupled with a 0.3 MP rear camera as well as the rear flash LED. The phone is equipped with a 1450 mAh battery that can last up to 9 hours. In addition, a Unisoc T107 chipset is coupled with 64MB of RAM and 128MB of internal memory.

How to Get a Barbie Flip Phone 

Barbie Flip Phone has been available in the UK for $130.74 since its first launch on August 28. It will be available to order for US consumers in October.
