TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Anies Baswedan's spokesperson, Sahrin Hamid, has confirmed that Anies received an offer from a political party to run in the 2024 West Java gubernatorial election. While Anies has not yet made a decision, the party is reportedly eligible to nominate a candidate.
The General Election Commission (KPU) is scheduled to close candidate registration for the 2024 Regional Election on Thursday night, August 29, 2024. The registration has been open since two days ago.
“There was indeed a special request from a political party asking Anies Baswedan to run in the West Java election,” Sahrin said in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta on Thursday night.
He claimed that the offer was conveyed directly by the party's top brass to Anies, but did not disclose the specific party involved. Anies is thoughtfully considering the offer, and Sahrin indicated that a decision will be announced soon. “Let’s wait for his decision.”
Sahrin emphasized that the former governor of Jakarta appreciated the offer and denied rumors that he was en route to Bandung to register as a gubernatorial candidate.
Previously, PDIP Central Leadership Council Chairperson Puan Maharani neither confirmed nor denied that the party would endorse Anies in the West Java election. “We'll see later, the registration period remains open in the afternoon,” Puan said at the Parliament Complex on Thursday, August 29, 2024.
Ono Surono, the Chairperson of the PDIP West Java Regional Leadership Council, asked the public to wait for the party's official announcement. He emphasized that the party will present a "surprise" gubernatorial-vice gubernatorial candidate.
PDIP was initially predicted to nominate Anies Baswedan for the Jakarta election but ultimately registered the Pramono Anung and Rano Karno pair instead.
