Transportation Ministry Clarifies on Hike in Commuter Line Fares

29 August 2024 21:50 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaRailways Director General of the Transportation Ministry, Risal Wasal, has confirmed that the planned implementation of a new fare structure for the Jabodetabek Commuter Line or KRL based on individual National Identification Numbers (NIKs) will not be implemented in the near future.

He explained that the scheme is part of the DG’s effort to provide more targeted subsidies for the commuter line. However, discussions with relevant stakeholders are ongoing to ensure its effectiveness.

“We are still discussing it with related parties,” Risal said in a written statement on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi also emphasized that the NIK-based subsidy, which is rumored to be implemented next year, is still under consideration and not a final decision. He stated that the ministry is conducting a study to ensure that subsidies are allocated to those who truly need them.

“It's still being studied,” he said in Jakarta on Thursday, August 29, 2024, as reported by Antara.

The news of the potential change in the fare structure has sparked discussions on social media. The 2025 Draft State Budget Financial Note mentions plans to discuss a budget for railway subsidy expenditure with the House of Representatives (DPR). This includes potential changes to the subsidy provision system for the Jabodetabek Commuter Line.
