TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies, East Java, experienced multiple eruptions since early Wednesday morning. Liswanto, Mount Semeru Observation Post Officer, said in a written statement today that the initial eruption occurred at 00:20 WIB (Western Indonesia Time), and 00:39 WIB, with ash columns reaching 800 meters in height.
Subsequent eruptions were recorded at 00:42 WIB, 01:03 WIB, 05:22 WIB, and 05:37 WIB, with varying ash column heights ranging from 500 to 600 meters. Visibility was hindered by fog during some of these eruptions.
Further eruptions occurred at 06:09 WIB and 07:35 WIB with ash columns reaching up to 500 meters above the summit. Another eruption at 8:06 WIB produced an ash column of around 800 meters, with maximum amplitudes ranging from 22 to 23 mm and durations of 100 to 132 seconds, while a final eruption at 8:36 WIB saw an ash plume of approximately 600 meters.
Sigit Rian Alfian, who is also an officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, confirmed that the volcano’s alert status remains at Level II (Caution/Waspada). Residents are asked to stay at least eight kilometers from the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan and five kilometers from the crater. The public is also advised to avoid areas within a three-kilometer radius of the summit due to the risk of falling rocks.
To mitigate potential hazards, residents are urged to be cautious of hot clouds, lava flows, and lahars in riverbeds originating from the mountain, particularly in the Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat areas.
