Human Trafficking in Indonesia, Social Affairs Minister: Ask Many Questions Before Working Overseas

9 August 2024 15:59 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaMinister of Social Affairs Tri Rismaharini met with eighteen victims of human trafficking in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. She warned prospective migrant workers to be cautious and vigilant so they won’t fall victim to human trafficking.

Risma hoped that they can be critical and ask questions about the requirement and consequences of working overseas to avoid fraudulent recruiters.

"If you want to work abroad, please ask many questions first. If you’re barred from asking questions, then you should suspect the recruiters,” she told the 18 victims at Efata Kupang Center hall as quoted from the ministry's press release on Friday, August 9, 2024.

Minister Risma also urged prospective migrant workers to not be tempted by the amount of wages offered.

She explained that there are many things to consider before working overseas. Prospective migrant workers must understand their rights and obligations as migrant workers to avoid being trafficked. They also ought to consider the risk of leaving their families behind.

Henderina Migu was one of 18 victims of human trafficking met by Social Minister Risma. The 17-year-old girl from Sabu Raijua Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province, dreams of working and studying at university.

"I want to work abroad because I want to help my family and I want to go to college," said Henderina.

Risma lauded Henderina's determination but reminded her that achieving said dreams would be difficult if she became a migrant worker through illegal means.

"It's good that you dream big, but you have to ask many questions to achieve it. One of the paths to take is looking for scholarships, especially if you’re clever,” said Risma.

Minister Risma also said she would form an assessment team to find solutions for the 18 victims and their relatives who might still need assistance.
