TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairman Erick Thohir expressed immense pride in the U-19 National Team's triumphant victory at the 2024 AFF U-19 Cup, which marked the nation's first title in the competition in 11 years.
“This is our first title in 11 years. We (Indonesia) are the champion of the AFF U-19 Cup, now officially named the ASEAN U19 Boys' Championship 2024,” Erick declared after the final match against Thailand at Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya on July 29, 2024.
Indonesia clinched the 1-0 victory over Thailand thanks to a goal by Jens Raven. Thohir admitted to eagerly anticipating this win, as the last U-19 title was achieved in 2013.
“I'm overjoyed. Unfortunately, our U-16 team fell short in the ASEAN competition, but the U-19 team has delivered,” said the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises.
He also said that this match and victory were used to find superior seeds in a bid to strengthen the senior national team. “At least, we have talents that can strengthen the national team.”
He further stressed the need to continue building a strong foundation for Indonesian football, focusing on grassroots development. “We must develop football from the bottom up, not just rely on top-level talent,” he remarked.
The 2024 AFF U-19 Cup championship title was secured under the guidance of coach Indra Sjafri, who made strategic changes to the starting lineup for the final match. Welber Jardim played a pivotal role alongside midfielder Muhammad Kafiatur, while Figo Dennis started on the bench. Jens Raven led the attack, supported by M Riski Afrisal and Arlyansyah Abdulmanan. This formation proved successful, with Raven's goal in the 17th minute securing the victory.
