TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - To be able to climb the highest mountain in the world is certainly a dream come true for nature lovers.

There are many mountains in the world that have a height above 7,000 meters above sea level.

Mount Everest is one of the highest mountains in the world today. The height of Mount Everest reaches 8,848 meters above sea level. Apart from Everest, what are the highest mountains in the world?

The Highest Mountains in the World

Most of the highest mountains in the world are located in Asia, more precisely spread across Nepal, Pakistan and China. Besides being famous for their height, some of these mountains also have difficult climbing routes. This condition is not a reason for climbers to give up, in fact it is a challenge in itself in conquering the highest peak in the world.

Summarizing from the World Atlas, the following is a list of the highest mountains in the world:

1. Mount Everest – 8,848 meters above sea level

The name Mount Everest is no longer foreign to the ears. Mount Everest is the mountain with the highest peak in the world. Having a height of 8,848 meters above sea level, this mountain is located in the Mahalangur Himal subrange in the Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and Tibet, China. The slopes of Mount Everest are surrounded by various types of glaciers and rivers.

On May 29, 1953, a mountain climber named Edmund Hillary, accompanied by Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, managed to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Edmund Hillary was named the first climber to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

2. Mount K2 – 8,611 meters above sea level

Mount K2 is also nicknamed Mount Godwin-Austen or Chhogori. With a height of 8,611 meters above sea level, K2 is the second highest mountain in the world. According to World Data, Mount K2 is included in the Karakoram mountain range located in Pakistan, China. It is nicknamed "Mount Savage" because climbers often die.

On July 31, 1954, Italian mountain climbers, Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni, succeeded in becoming the first people to conquer the peak of Mount K2.

3. Mount Kangchenjunga – 8,598 meters above sea level

Located in India, the title of third highest mountain in the world is crowned to Mount Kangchenjunga. This mountain with a height of 8,598 meters above sea level is also the highest mountain in its country, India. Of the total five major peaks of Kangchenjunga, three of them are located on the border between the Indian State of Sikkim and the eastern part of Nepal. Then, two other peaks are located in the Taplejung District of Nepal.

There are many protected areas around Mount Kangchenjunga, such as Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim, Neora Valley National Park in Darjeeling, and Kangchenjunga Conservation Area in Nepal.

4. Mount Lhotse – 8,516 meters above sea level

In fourth position, there is Mount Lhotse as the highest mountain in the world. This mountain has a height of 8,516 meters above sea level. Mount Lhotse is included in the Mahalangur Himal range of the Himalayas along the border of Khumbu, Nepal and Tibet, China. Swiss climbers, Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger, succeeded in conquering the main peak of this mountain on May 18, 1956.

5. Mount Makalu – 8,485 meters above sea level

The highest mountain in the world in fifth position is occupied by Mount Makalu. With a height of 8,485 meters. Makalu is famous for its pyramid-shaped peak. The famous branch peaks of this mountain are Kangchungtse or Makalu II and Chomo Lonzo. On May 15, 1955, French climbers Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy became the first climbers to successfully climb Mount Makalu to the top.

6. Mount Cho Oyu – 8,188 meters above sea level

Mount Cho Oyu, with a height of 8,188 meters above sea level, is the sixth highest mountain in the world. The location of this mountain is about 20 km west of Mount Everest. Located on the border between Nepal and China. Even though it is one of the highest mountains, Mount Cho Oyu is included in the category of easiest peak to climb. On October 19, 1954, Austrian climbers Herbert Tichy and Joseph Jochler successfully climbed Mount Cho Oyu for the first time.

7. Mount Dhaulagiri I – 8,167 meters above sea level

Having a height of 8,167 meters above sea level, Mount Dhaulagiri I ranks as the seventh highest mountain in the world. Aesthetically, this mountain is considered superior compared to other mountains. On May 13, 1960, Swiss and Austrian mountain climbers, namely Kurt Diemberger, Albin Schelbert, Peter Diener, Ernst Forrer, and two others became the first climbers of Mount Dhaulagiri I.

8. Mount Manaslu – 8,163 meters above sea level

Mount Manaslu, which has a height of 8,163 meters above sea level, is in eighth position. The name "Manaslu" is taken from the Sanskrit word "Manasa" which means "soul" or "intelligence". On May 9, 1956, Japanese climbers, Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Manaslu.

9. Mount Nanga Parbat – 8,126 meters above sea level

Mount Nanga Parbat occupies the ninth position as the highest mountain in the world with a height of 8,126 meters. This mountain is located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Mount Nanga Parbat is located just south of the Indus River and is included in the peak range of the Himalayan Mountains. On July 3, 1953, Austrian mountaineer Hermann Buhl became the first climber to climb the peak of Mount Nanga Parbat.

10. Mount Annapurna I – 8,091 meters above sea level

The tenth highest mountain in the world is filled by Mount Annapurna I, which has a height of 8,091 meters above sea level. This mountain is classified as a mountain that is difficult to climb and has the highest death ratio compared to other mountain peaks. On June 3, 1950, French climbers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal succeeded in becoming the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Annapurna I.
