TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto met with President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday afternoon, June 13. The President-elect was to report on the outcome of his working visit to Jordan for the high-level conference "Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza".
The summit was co-hosted by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the United Nations (UN) on June 11 in Jordan.
Prabowo said he had just arrived at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in East Jakarta at 11 a.m. Jakarta time. By 1:40 p.m., he arrived at the State Palace.
“We hope to convince Israel in particular to cease their attacks,” said Prabowo.
On the sidelines of his visit to Jordan, Prabowo held a bilateral meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein. He also met with United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken to discuss the alarming situation in Gaza.
“We are calling on both parties, including Hamas, to seize this opportunity to end the fight, save the lives of innocent people, unarmed people, non-combatants, civilians, mothers, children,” Prabowo said.
Negotiators from the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar have been trying for months to mediate a ceasefire and free the hostages, more than 100 of whom are believed to remain captive in Gaza.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday that Hamas had proposed numerous changes, some unworkable, to a U.S.-backed proposal for a ceasefire with Israel in Gaza. However, he insisted that Washington and mediators would press ahead to bridge the gaps.
