Indonesia Expresses Concern over Gaza at IAEA Meeting

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has once again condemned Israel's attacks on Palestine, which resulted in increasing casualties. Indonesia also expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in Gaza and Rafah, which was exacerbated by Israel's threat to use nuclear weapons.

"Such unreasonable statements amid the military aggression carried out by Israel against Palestine are very irresponsible. Indonesia believes that the threat to use nuclear weapons under any circumstances is contrary to international law and cannot be accepted," said Alfiano Tamala, Indonesia's Deputy Ambassador to Austria, Slovenia, and International Organizations in Vienna, at the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Board of Governors meeting in Vienna on June 7.

Indonesia made this statement because of the international community's suspicion of Israel's peaceful nuclear program and doubts about Israel's commitment to nuclear disarmament. On this basis, Indonesia encourages the Director General of the IAEA to urge Israel to accede to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and hand over all its nuclear facilities under IAEA supervision as stipulated in UN Security Council Resolution 487 and other related IAEA resolutions.

"In line with Indonesia's commitment and support for Palestine, Indonesia urges Israel to comply with international law and encourages the Director General of the IAEA to urge Israel to immediately accede to the NPT and hand over all its nuclear facilities under IAEA supervision," Alfiano said.

Meanwhile, on Friday, June 7, 2024, Israeli attacks in central and southern Gaza killed at least 28 Palestinians. Israeli military tanks are moving deeper into the Rafah area.

This week, a team of U.S.-backed mediators from Egypt and Qatar tried to bring about reconciliation. During the eight months of Israeli offensives in Gaza, cease-fire efforts stalled because of the clashing interests of Hamas and Israel.
