TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Commissioner Agustina Sineri, deputy police chief of Manokwari City, West Papua, said that local civilians are beginning to become legally aware of the ownership of firearms. This year so far, she said, the district police had recovered 33 firearms from the hands of civilians.
Her statement came after two groups of Manokwari residents deliberately and voluntarily handed over two Mouser-type firearms to the police station.
"This means that the legal awareness of Manokwari civil society regarding the ownership of firearms is beginning to appear and will continue to increase," Sineri said at the Manokwari Police Station on Wednesday, June 5.
Sineri said the weapons were surrendered to the police following a persuasive investigation by a special team from the district's Criminal Investigation Department in collaboration with community groups. "The team conducted peace negotiations so that civilians known to be in possession of weapons came to their senses and turned them over to the police," she said.
Two original, unassembled Mouser-type rifles were surrendered by residents of Pami Gunung village, North Manokwari Regency, and residents of Imbesika village, Tanah Rubuh Regency, which fall under the Manokwari Police's jurisdiction.
Throughout 2024, Agustina Sineri said, the district had recovered 33 firearms from the hands of civilians. She appealed to all civil society in the Manokwari Regency area to know the legal consequences of possessing firearms without a permit.
"There is an emergency law that can ensnare any civilian who is found in possession of a gun without permission because it has the potential for misuse and used to threaten other people," she said.
