TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe aviation industry is showing signs of recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, as reflected in the latest list of the world's busiest airports for June 2024 by the Official Airline Guide (OAG).

Atlanta Remains in Power

Topping the list, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in the United States maintained its position as the world's busiest airport for June 2024. The airport serves 5.5 million seats, representing a 2 percent increase per day compared to the previous month.

On the other hand, Dubai International Airport (DXB) in the United Arab Emirates follows closely in second place with 4.9 million seats. The airport continues to be a major global hub, connecting the Middle East with global destinations.

Changes in Third and Fifth Position

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) in the United States moved up to third place, dethroning Denver International Airport (DEN). DFW recorded a 6 percent increase in daily seat capacity, indicating a strong recovery in the US domestic market. Meanwhile, DEN experienced the same 6 percent increase but failed to maintain its position in third place.

Newcomer from China

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) in China moved up a position from 11th in the list last year. This reflects China's economic growth and increasing demand for domestic and international travel. On the other hand, Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) dropped out of the top 10 list. The airport has been affected by tighter travel restrictions in China due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Recovery

The June 2024 list of the world's busiest airports reflects the ongoing recovery of the global aviation industry. Airports in North America and Europe still dominate, but airports in East Asia show promising growth. For travelers, this information helps them choose an airport suitable for their needs and preferences, as well as estimate possible crowds and waiting times.

The complete list of the top 10 busiest airports in the world in June 2024 is as follows:

  1. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (5,470,901 seats)
  2. Dubai International Airport (4,937,732 seats)
