TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Long during his series of working visits at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Monday, April 29, 2024.
Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Singapore's successor Prime Minister Lawrance Wong specifically joined the conversation on the Palace veranda. The conversations that took place between the four leaders are a signal of the continuation of partnerships between Indonesia and Singapore.
The Leaders' Retreat between Indonesian President Jokowi and PM Lee will review the past 10 years of cooperation while expressing a commitment to continue the partnership. Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi confirmed that the meeting was a commitment to continued collaboration between both countries.
"So, apart from celebrating (past partnerships), it will also signal the continuity of good relations between the two countries," said Retno in a press statement at the Jakarta Palace last Thursday.
Lee Hsien Loong announced on April 15 that he would hand over government control to Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on May 15, marking the city-state's first leadership change in 20 years.
Meanwhile, President Jokowi will retire on October 20, 2024, after President-elect Prabowo Subianto is inaugurated. Prabowo, currently active as Minister of Defense, will head the country alongside Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka – Jokowi's eldest son. Prabowo-Gibran carried the theme of sustainability during their 2024 election campaign.
The Indonesian and Singaporean leaders will discuss several potential bilateral cooperation. These include green energy, especially solar farms, carbon capture storage, Batam-Bintan-Karimun development, digital connectivity, and the data center.
