Transportation Minister Encourages the Use of Electric Buses

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi encourages using high-tech and sustainable electric buses in Indonesia. He said that only 81 electric bus units have obtained a Type Test Registration Certificate.

"The government encourages public transportation companies to provide environmentally friendly transportation," he said while attending the Busworld Southeast Asia exhibition in Kemayoran, Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

He projects that the use of electric buses will be massive in the next few years. The government may require a number of big cities to operate electric buses.

The Ministry of Transportation has established relevant programs and policies to support implementing a sustainable transportation system. One of them is electric transportation. This policy aligns with the government's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"The presence of electric buses has a good impact on the environment. Because pollution has become a problem in big cities," he said. According to him, one solution to reduce the level of environmental pollution is the use of electric vehicles.

He also instructed transportation producers and business players to pay attention to safety aspects in the production of bus units. "I ask that the focus be not only on producing quality buses but also on safety," he said.

He considered safety an important aspect to consider when discussing transportation. On the other hand, Transportation Observer from the Indonesian Transportation Society Djoko Setijowarno said that bus accidents in Indonesia are still rampant.

The reason is the lack of supervision from the government and police to crack down on bus companies that deliberately violate the rules. Therefore, he requested that the Ministry of Transportation's Directorate of Land Transportation Safety be reactivated following the implementation of law enforcement for buses that are not roadworthy and do not have permits.
