Top Court to Start Hearing for Legislative Election Dispute Today

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Constitutional Court (MK) will hold the first hearing on disputes over legislative election results today, Monday, April 29, 2024.
MK Spokesperson Fajar Laksono said there are a total of 297 cases registered for the 2024 legislative election disputes. He explained that the trials would be divided into three panels.
The first hearing will start today and continue on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday "So we have four days scheduled for a preliminary hearing, and hear the claims," said Fajar last week on April 26, 2024.
Today’s hearing will concern 79 cases, with the applicants including PDIP (Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle) and the United Development Party or PPP, and individual applicants such as the former Chairman of DPD Irman Gusman.
Fajar also explained that the first hearing started at 08:00 a.m. and the last at 03:30 p.m. but that it would be “situational for each slated hearing”.
Chairman of PPP, Achmad Baidowi, said that the party had prepared evidence and witnesses for the legislative election dispute hearing. Achmad or Awiek said that PPP will convince the MK Justices that the party lost votes during KPU counting.
"Our strategy is to prepare strong evidence and witnesses. We will also argue the facts during the trial," Awiek told Tempo on Sunday.
He is optimistic that the court will decide in his party’s favor. According to the Acting Chair of PPP Mardiono, the are over 600,000 vote differences between internal counting and the counting done by the General Elections Commission (KPU).
"We invite the Constitutional Court to examine all the data and facts we have presented," he said.
For information, the PPP registers the highest number of cases at the Constituional Court with 24 cases in total. PPP failed to pass the 4 percent threshold at the legislative elections with a total of 5,878,777 votes or 3.87 percent.
