TEMPO.CO, Jakarta PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia or InJourney Airports is optimistic that the Ministry of Transportation's regulations to cut the number of international airports will improve the national airport system. InJourney assesses that the adjustment will positively impact Indonesia’s air connectivity and tourism.

Previously, the Ministry of Transportation issued Ministerial Decree Number 31 of 2024 (KM 31/2024) on the Determination of International Airports dated April 2, 2024. Through this decision, the number of international airports in Indonesia is 17, a decrease from the initial 34 airports. Meanwhile, after the decree, Injourney Airports will manage 16 international airports out of a total of 37 airports it operates.

President Director of InJourney Airports, Faik Fahmi stated that KM 31/2024 is in line with InJourney Airports' transformation program regarding airport structuring progress in Indonesia. As the airport manager, InJourney aims to build efficient and effective air connectivity to encourage tourism and economic growth through good management of the aviation ecosystem, including airports.

"There are many airports with international status but no international flights for a long time, or only 2-3 times a week," said Faik in his statement, on Sunday, April 28, 2024.

According to him, the rare number of trips overseas in some international airports causes inefficiency and less-than-optimal utilization of facilities in the international terminals.

Faik explained that the airport transformation began with the merger of PT Angkasa Pura I and PT Angkasa Pura II. Later, through this merger, InJourney Airports will implement a regionalization pattern in the 37 airports it manages.

Faik explained that the regionalization would divide the airports into hubs and spokes. "The hub and spoke pattern can build good connectivity from hub airports to all regions of Indonesia," he said. According to him, the hub and spoke pattern is the best choice to be implemented in the global aviation industry.

According to Faik, the regionalization concept was generally accepted and effective in various countries, including the United States, which has a total of 2,000 airports, of which only 18 have international status.

The following international airports are managed by InJourney Airports.

1.Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport, Aceh

2. Kualanamu Airport, Medan

3. Minangkabau Airport, West Sumatra

4. Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport, Riau

5. Hang Nadim Airport, Riau Islands
